Weekly Roundup and Race Report - week ending 17th July 2022

Greenway 5k Road Race

The latest round of the club championship on Wednesday was the Greenway 5k, part of the Burnley and Pendle Grand Prix series.

The evening includes a series of out and back races increasing in length, starting with a 1k race for the under 8’s and it was great to see a turnout of RRC Juniors and regular junior parkrunners taking part and supporting.

The 5k course is a straightforward, traffic free out and back along a narrow path. The lack of chip timing meant that faster runners needed to jostle for a front line start position and there was a real risk of getting caught in the tangle of legs at the start. 

The field soon thinned out and the series of gentle but noticeable inclines stretched out in front before a very tight switchback at the bottom of the steepest little hill. This is the point where your momentum is lost and you must dig in to get going again, encouraged by teammates heading in the opposite direction.

The race is billed as a 5k PB opportunity and several RRC runners took full advantage. Paula Pilling, Sarah Sutcliffe, Connor Barrett, Tom White, Alice Bernstein, Simon Jones all managed to break their previous records as did Heidi Waterfall-Hallam in her junior race. I’m sure there were others too so apologies to those I’ve missed.

RRC ladies were on-fire throughout and it’s a shame that there were no team prizes to go with the individual awards for Alice and Paula.

Spartan Beast

Chris Swainson headed for the midlands this week for the half marathon distance Spartan obstacle course 🗡

Five Peaks- Goldbar Park

Andrew Giles was in Goldbar Park, Edmonton running and volunteering in a race the organisers describe as starting with a “long grinding hill”. Just the sort of thing we love round here too! 

Pendleside Hospice 10k

On Sunday in the hottest conditions of the summer so far, a few brave rams raced this fundraiser for Pendleside Hospice. Lee Ford, Diane Ford, Helen Binns, Helen Mcvey and Marissa McPhillips all took part.

Holiday season means it’s getting harder to keep up with all the parkrun tourists. 

We were represented at 17 different runs this weekend. Locally, Paula Pilling was again first lady at Bolton where Nydia Arunkumar also achieved a PB in the heat. 

Danny Clarke also achieved a PB at our club championship run at Peel Park.

Cecilia Woods was our sole representative at Burnage where she also PB’d with a remarkable 79% age grading.

Further away Sacha Cooper and Andrew Norman were in the Southeast at Penrose and Eden Project parkruns. Alan Blagburn is still collecting new runs and was close to these two at Killerton in Exeter.

Alexander Shield wasn’t hanging around at Bath Skyline where he raced ahead of Catherine Shield and Luisa Shield.

Back in the UK from Hong Kong, Tristan Kent was at Hunstanton Promenade where he finished 3rd overall. Tristan’s dragon boat cross training seems to be paying off.
